APPLIANCE TECH TIPS

Washer Odors

“My clothes are clean, but my washer has a really bad odor...”

Are you experiencing a foul or unusual odor coming from your washer? A common complaint that we hear from our customers is that there is an odor coming from their high efficiency (HE) front loading washers.

R & C Appliance Service recommends that its customers follow these guidelines to help to reduce/eliminate odors experienced with high efficiency front loader washers.

Use high efficiency (HE) detergent. We have found that using powdered detergent rather than liquid detergent also helps to minimize odor.

Remove wet laundry as soon as the cycle is complete.

ALWAYS leave the washer door open to allow the washer to dry and for air to circulate.

AFFRESH

R & C Appliance Technicians also recommend the use of a product called AFFRESH to help eliminate these odors.

Stop by the R & C Appliance Service office for a free sample of AFFRESH for your washer and your dishwasher.

Refrigerator Odors

For maintenance purposes, try keeping an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator and freezer to keep your refrigerator smelling fresh. Change the baking soda every 3 months.

For more difficult odor issues such as a refrigerator that has failed and has a spoiled food odor, we recommend the following options.

Clean refrigerator thoroughly with a solution of warm water and vinegar.

Distribute charcoal briquettes (use briquettes that have not been treated with lighter fluid) throughout the refrigerator and freezer. Disposable plates are a good choice to hold the briquettes and provide easy cleanup.

Crumpled newspaper—fill the entire cavity of the refrigerator and freezer with crumpled newspaper for a minimum of 24 hours. (Note: The ink in the newspaper absorbs the odor.)

A commercial solution called Kleen-Air made by Supco is also an option. Kleen-Air is non-toxic and odorless and can be purchased at R & C Appliance Service. .

Dryers

A common compliant is slow drying time with dryers. The typical cause of this problem is a restricted vent system. To test, turn your dryer on and then go to where the dryer vents to the outdoors. Check for an adequate air flow. If there is not an adequate air flow, the vent system is most likely clogged. In extreme cases, the vent may need to be cleaned by a professional. Call R & C Appliance Service for an assessment and potential vent cleaning.

Dishwasher

Occasionally the wrong detergent is mistakenly added to the dishwasher which tends to cause an extreme sudsing problem and leaking from the dishwasher. If this happens to you, add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil to the wash cycle to eliminate this problem.

Electronically Controlled Appliances

With the technological advancements in today’s appliances and the use of electronic controls, your appliances are much like a personal computer. Appliances can malfunction and not respond properly requiring that you reset the control board back to factory default.

In order to do this, the Technicians at R & C Appliance Service recommend that you unplug the appliance or flip the breaker to the OFF position for 3 to 5 minutes to reset controls and possibly take care of the problem. If there is no change, call R & C Appliance Service to schedule for one of our trained Technicians to assess the problem and make a repair.
